The Championship Weekend stops in Montreal

The top ultimate players in North America will descend on Montreal this August to crown the best team in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL). The Montreal Royal, a professional ultimate team that competes in the AUDL, convinced the league that its hometown would be the best place to hold the VI Championship weekend on August 26-27, 2017.

In the past three seasons, the Royal organization has shown its ability to attract big-name media, including TVA Sports, as well as the general public and dedicated fans to it games.

“We have good visibility, both in the media that broadcasts our games and with our loyal fans in the stands. We offer an excellent game experience that is attractive to families, the ultimate community and those who are curious about disc sports. Our level of organization has also helped Montreal stand out,” explained Jean-Levy Champagne, co-owner of the Royal.

AUDL commissioner Steve Gordon agrees.“Championship Weekend in Madison [in 2016] set a new bar for both attendance and excitement, and we expect Montreal to raise that bar even higher,” said Gordon. “The city has a rabid ultimate community, attends Royal games in record numbers and provides the perfect backdrop for our season-crowning event. With the support of the strong Royal ownership, we expect this to be the best Championship Weekend yet. We couldn’t be more excited!”

Numerous challenges await the organizing committee in charge of planning this large sporting event.“We want to beat the attendance record. In 2016, 3400 fans attended the Championship games and we believe we’ll be able to attract 4000,” said Champagne.

It’s an attainable goal, according to the co-owner, because the Royal has beaten attendance records since its first year in the AUDL, and still holds the record for the most spectators at a game during the regular season.Be sure to mark August 26th and 27th down on your calendar because it will be a weekend not to be missed!
